My first GAME plan goal is to:
1c: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experience that advance student learning, creativity and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.
My goal is to begin using my class wiki. I am finding the resources that I need. There is a lot of information on the Internet about ways to implement wiki's in the classroom and I have also gotten some good ideas from my Walden cohort. I am trying to find the time with the end of the year coming to teach students how to access the wiki. I need to either find time to take my class to the computer lab or work with a smaller group of students in my class. This will be a bit of a challenge with all of the end of the year activities that are happening at school. I have learned that I should start small. Maybe pose a question to the students and have them practice accessing the wiki and collaborating. My only question is, how do I fit this in?
My second GAME plan goal is to:
2d: Design and Develop Digital Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS-S.
My goal is to have a digital file with student goals (academic, technology and behavior goals). My students had written goals and their action plans for each subject area. I have typed these all into individual files on my computer. Next year I plan on using Google Drive or another site where students could access their own files and make notes on their progress. I'm not very familiar with all of the options but am currently researching different sites and trying to narrow down some choices. I would like to have started this earlier in the year but feel that I would really be wasting a lot of time and energy because by the time I finished setting it up we would be on our last week of school. What I do plan to do during this course is to learn how to use a program so that the first day of school we can begin discussing goals, action plans, and digital files. This will allow for students to monitor their success and areas of focus from the very beginning of the year.
Hi Amy,
ReplyDeleteYou have a really great idea, with students creating their goals and action plans. Do their plans and goals correlate with content standards or assigned topics? For next year, you can use the Google Drive as an introductory tool and end of the year reflection. It will be a great way for students to look over comments and progress and reflect on what they learned. I think it's an excellent idea and it also encourages them to be accountable for that they do.

Amy,
ReplyDeleteI too feel your anxiety in trying to implement new technology and lessons so close to the end of the year. I would suggest that you choose a lesson or skill that will help prepare or introduce material students will learn next year. I teach fourth grade and I am going to introduce the state quarters and have students research what is on the quarters. In fifth grade, students learn about the states so I thought it would be interesting. My students are going onto the US mint website and finding their information. Then describing four things they notice about their quarter and why it represents that state. You could do some kind of research or upcoming skill and have students use the wiki at home or in school. Do you blog with your students. That is also an easy technology to introduce and implement. I use edublogs.com which is user friendly and easy for students use. I love the idea about the google drive access for students have having them track their progress.
Hello Amy, I liked reading about your GAME plan progress this week. Like you, I am also feeling the stress of trying to squeeze in my GAME plans as the end of the year comes to a rapid close. I agree with you though that this needs to be done in small steps and has to be given more time. I will have some students I tutor over the summer so hopefully I'll be able to work on my GAME plans with them. I love how you wrote about using Google Drive next year. I have used it several times and it is an excellent way to encourage collaboration among students and fellow colleagues. To me, it sounds like you are making great progress with your GAME plans even though you may feel that you are running out of time. Recognizing the importance of these GAME plans as part of your professional growth and creating steps to get them in action is more than many other teachers do.
ReplyDeleteJennifer, DeEtte and Taylor,
ReplyDeleteWell, you all said Google Drive is great so I will definitely look into using it next year. Jennifer, my students looked at the end of third grade expectations and wrote two goals and two action plans for each area of learning (reading, math, writing, science, technology, behavior and attendance). It is the first year I have done goal setting, and it has been so great to see students take ownership over their learning. I will be doing the goal setting with digital files next year. DeEtte, I haven't done blogging with my students but I have a class blog that the kids look at all of the time (mostly to see their work posted!) but, I could have them go to the blog an find one of the posts and leave a comment. I think this would be a great way for them to be a part of the class blog and they can continue you to visit next year. Here is my class blog: mrsseiber.blogspot.com Taylor, yes small steps are important! I have found that if I don't do that I will get overwhelmed and my good intentions will fizzle.
